HOUSTON - Students at a north Houston school were sent home early from classes after storms knocked out power.
Just a month into their school year, nearly a thousand students at YES Prep's North Central Campus, 13703 Aldine Westfield Road, are getting an unexpected break. School director Bryan Reed said storms swept through the area as student were arriving for class.
The heavy rains and wind were strong enough to send several trees on the edge of campus toppling into power lines around 6:50 a.m. Thursday.
"I hear a big boom," said student Deliana Deleon. "Everybody kept saying, 'Oh, the lights are going out.'"
"I got scared because I didn't know what was going on," said student Asia Ball.
With electricity wiped out on two-thirds of the campus, students and staff couldn't do much in the darkness and intense heat.
"The majority of our students did not have a classroom to go to," said Reed. "There is no A/C and it is blistering inside."
Reed said staff members were able to alert some parents as they came to drop off their children. For hundreds more students already sitting in class, he said staff first made sure everyone was safe and then started allowing students to call their parents.
"He was calling me and calling me like 20 times and I was in my class, and had my phone off," said parent Maria Gomez.
Eventually Gomez made it from her own English as a second language class over to YES Prep to pick up her son.
For other students, like Ball, waiting at school was the only option.
"I had to call home but my mom, she was at work so I didn't really have anyone to come pick me up," said Ball.
She and about 30 other students stayed with staff in the small portion of campus that still had electricity.
CenterPoint Energy officials said about 700 other customers in that same north Houston area were also without power because of another weather-related circuit outage. Officials said they were working to repair all issues by Thursday late evening.
Reed said he hopes to have school back open for classes on Friday.
