Houston Newsmakers Feb. 14: SB 51 is coming but the Final Four is almost here

Doug Hall is President & CEO of the Houston Local Organizing Committee for the 2016 NCAA Men’s Final Four. A long title for a big event that is less than seven weeks away. Hall is a guest on Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall and says everything is on track but they could use more volunteers.

“We need about another 500 volunteers to sign up and get their training in the first of March so they’ll be ready by the first of April,” he said. “ So we’re dealing with a hundred little details but the big picture stuff we’re in good shape on.”

On a good day, traffic can be a big problem for Houstonians. Hall talks about how the Final Four committee is planning to keep that from becoming a Final Four headache.

The City of Houston Summer Jobs Program is looking for 450 people between the ages of 16 & 21. The application period starts Monday February 15th and runs through March 18th. Velma Laws is special projects Coordinator for the City of Houston Human Resources and says this is a great chance for someone looking to get their foot in the door. “Whether it’s health and human services, parks and recreation, the library, public works and engineering, solid waste management. We have opportunities all over the city,” she said.

Donn Kizzee says alcohol and bad decisions, not necessarily in that order, is what led to him being homeless. It has not kept him from writing a book about the challenges and problems of not having a place to call home. His book is called “Throwaways” based upon his view of how others viewed him and others who call Houston’s streets home. “I have been dedicated to this mission for about five years now,” he said. “It’s just a matter of getting up every day and saying ok what can I get done today.”
