San Jacinto sheriff dies

HOUSTON – San Jacinto County Sheriff James Lewis Walters died Wednesday after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Walters was elected into office on Jan. 1, 2009, and was recently re-elected to a second term.

County officials said, "Walters was dedicated to serving the citizens of this great county, and in his final wishes concerning the county asked his chief deputy, and friend of more than 20 years, Robert Long, to continue the work that he starting in moving the Sheriff's Department forward."

Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized.
