Roommates checking mail shot in attempted robbery, deputies say

HOUSTON – Deputies said two men were shot Monday night as they checked their mail at the community mailboxes inside their North Harris County apartment complex.

The mailboxes were located near the front entrance of the apartment complex on Blue Bell Road near Veterans Memorial Drive.

Paramedics were seen loading the victims into ambulances, and both appeared to be alert and conscious.

Deputies said two other men walked up to the roommates at the mailboxes just before 9 p.m. They said one man pulled out a gun and tried to rob the roommates. They said the roommates fought back and the gunman shot one in the leg and the other in the leg and shoulder.

Residents were concerned that a simple daily task ended in a shooting.

“It sounds scary, and it makes me not want to check my mailbox during the morning time, early in the morning, like this, or even at night,” resident Deborah Jarrett said. “Maybe more police officers will patrol through here.”

The shooter and the other man fled the scene, and descriptions of the men were not immediately released.

Anyone with information about the case should call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.
