Richard Carranza named new HISD superintendent

HOUSTON – After formal vote by the board, HISD's newest superintendent, Richard Carranza, signed his contract and got a welcome like only Houston could do -- with mariachi music.

Carranza said he's looking forward to getting to work as the new leader of the state's largest school district.

Carranza said, "There's no preconceived agenda that I'm bringing except that every child will be served in our schools."

As for the challenges ahead for the district, Carranza said the key will be communication with the community, along with transparency.

"One of the things we need to talk about is how do we ensure students have equitable access to all of the wonderful opportunities that exist in Houston," explained Carranza.

Carranza's message to parents, teachers and staff, was to plan on seeing a lot of him as he looks to build relationships by attending any and all events and meetings.

Carranza said, "We will do all that we need to make sure every student has a pathway to a fulfilling college or career once they leave our school system."

The new super said he plans to be up front, out in the community and involved.

Such was the case with how this meeting ended, Carranza carrying a tune along with the mariachi band that welcomed him.
