Restaurant Report Card: Roaches, slime and condemned food at area restaurants

HOUSTON – We’re cooking up another edition of the Restaurant Report Card and we begin this week with Shan Hu at 7656 Belfort.

Health inspectors found roaches on the floor of the employee restroom.

They also found completely uncovered foods stored in the walk-in cooler.

And to top it off, they found black slime in the ice machine.

At Church’s Chicken, at 9404 North Freeway, health officials found an insect problem in the kitchen.

Health department officials wrote that they found an infestation of roaches in several parts of the kitchen and food-prep area.

They also found flies in the kitchen as well.

Switching gears, we move to dangerous temperature issues, and health inspectors found them at China Border at 10718 North Freeway.

There, they ordered 10 pounds of cooked shrimp and stuffed crab be condemned and thrown away because it was deemed unsafe for human consumption.

At La Pupuseria Taqueria Bet-El at 3903 W. Orem, inspectors found live and dead cockroaches in the food-prep area.

And over at Capt’n Benny’s Half Shell at 8506 Main St., where oysters reign supreme, inspectors found a mixture of pink and black slime in the ice machine.

The health department’s order to managers was simply to discard all of the ice and clean the machine.

And Bon Jour, we take our hats off this week to a Houston breakfast house favorite, Le Peep on Woodway Drive.

Our peeps at Le Peep score our prestigious A+ rating this week for a perfect restaurant inspection report.

We say congratulations to the hardworking staff at Le Peep.
