Restaurant Report Card: Off-temperature seafood & rat droppings

HOUSTON – Off-temperature seafood could get you sick in a hurry. It's why health inspectors condemned a whole fridge of it at one Houston seafood restaurant.

The General Manager of Denis Seafood at 9777 Katy freeway escorted us outside for a quick comment to our questions.

"We had a cooler that was at the wrong temperature," explained Marc Caldwell.  "The cooler had gone out. Had the cooler replaced, threw all the seafood out. Unfortunately it was the same day that the health department had came in."

Crawfish, shrimp, crabmeat and scallops were all condemned. Caldwell says the cooler is now repaired.

"So you wouldn't have served that food to anyone?" Davis asked him. "No ma'am," answered Caldwell.

The folks at J. Black's Feel Good Kitchen & Lounge on Heights and Washington Avenue probably weren't feeling too good after inspectors pointed out the rodent droppings above the dish washing machine and the slime in the ice machine.

The slime was black at Mandarin Hunan Chinese at 777 Walker Street.

At O'Yeah Cafe at 5004 Kirby inspectors said "Oh no" to the number of flies buzzing around the restaurant.

Back downtown at the Walker Street Gastropub at 2006 Walker, inspectors found the dish machine was not properly sanitizing the plates and utensils.

Our 'A's for spotless inspections this week go to James Coney Island at 1750 Stebbins and Subway at 12605 South Gessner. Congratulations to both restaurants!
