Restaurant Report Card: Minute Maid, family steakhouse among latest food-inspector violators

HOUSTON – We are taking you out to the ballpark this week, to Minute Maid Park.

There, a couple of food vendors have struck out with the Houston Health Department.

Inspectors found black slime in the ice bins at Street Eats in Section 126 and Home And Away in Section 113.

They also found food at dangerous temperatures at H Town in Section 124 and The Blue Bell/Papa John’s in Section 116.

A family steakhouse favorite is in hot water this week with inspectors.

At Texas Land and Cattle at 8015 W. FM 1960, inspectors found an employee using his bare hands to pick up jalapenos, onion rings and diced tomatoes.

That’s a violation, folks.

The rules say employees have to use gloves.

At The Spaghetti Warehouse on Commerce Street, inspectors found food stored at unsafe temperatures.

They condemned 20 pounds of chicken, spinach dip, cheese mushrooms and tomatoes, all stored above what is considered safe temps.

At the Lucky House Chinese Buffet on Hammerly, owners not so lucky this time around.

Here, the Health Department found black slime and live roaches in the ice machine.

The owner told us the ice was thrown out, the machine thoroughly cleaned and disinfected and professional pest control was scheduled to come in Thursday.

At La Guerrero Meat Market at 4420 N. Shepherd, bags of rice were contaminated.

Health inspectors found weevils living inside those bags; they also found roaches in the store.

And finally, Holy Baklava!

This week we pay tribute to the hard-working staff at Niko Nikos Market Square for knocking out a perfect inspection report.

They get KPRC’s prestigious A-Plus rating, and we say “Opa.”
