HOUSTON – We're going upscale in this week's Restaurant Report Card. Restaurant rating service Zagat says Benjy's on Washington Avenue has "knock-out American fare and stellar people watching."
The customers may be cool, but Houston health inspectors said the trendy bar and restaurant wasn't keeping potentially hazardous food like turkey and salmon "cool" enough.
"Everything's been taken care of," said Benjy's manager Vinnie. "All the issues were addressed day of."
Vinnie told consumer expert Amy Davis that a cooler wasn't working properly, but they got it fixed in a snap.
Benjy's was also warned about flies in the bar area.
"The flies do come whenever the heat increases," the manager explained. "We also have a drain system, so they kind of build up in there. But we do have people that clean them out multiple times a week."
Inspectors deemed the food at the Houston Metropolitan Racquet Club inside 1 Allen Center not safe for human consumption because it was off temperature for more than 4 hours.
Alden Hotel downtown is now the Sam Houston Hotel, and its namesake wouldn't likely be proud of the latest health inspection.
The hotel got a citation for off temperature food "not safe for human consumption" and slime in the ice machine.
Fruit flies were swarming around the fries and other food in the kitchen at Wingstop at 11009 Fuqua.
Champion Pizza at 6101 Glenmont makes our list again for the same violations. Live roaches and rodent droppings in the food prep area.
Grab a cupcake from Celebrity Cupcake at 2343 University Boulevard where the owner is the star for a spotless inspection.
Another "A" goes to Nundini Chef's Table at 500 North Shepherd. Congratulations to both restaurants.
