Resolution to ban undocumented children in League City

LEAGUE CITY, Texas – Local governments are pushing back against the federal government in the humanitarian crisis at the border. The message is don't send undocumented children to our city.

League City council members are considering a resolution to decline federal requests to set up processing or detention facilities there.

A public workshop took place Monday night. Council members took comments from the public. The council will vote on the resolution Tuesday.

No one is aware of any requests to bring undocumented children to League City, but the council member who wrote the resolution says the city needs to take a preemptive stance.

Council Member Heidi Theiss says bringing illegal immigrants to League City will burden emergency services, infrastructure and schools. Approximately 52,000 unaccompanied children have crossed the border into the United States from Central America and Mexico in recent months, and with the help of Health and Human Services, they've been processed and held in detention facilities set up in cities across the country.

The federal government didn't ask some of these communities permission or authorization.

Last week in California, protesters blocked a bus of immigrants federal workers were trying to unload.

Now it's local governments trying to block them with resolutions that they hope get the attention of federal lawmakers.

Galveston County is also considering an ordinance Tuesday. We know undocumented children are in Brazoria County and Galveston County already.
