HOUSTON – Some residents in neighborhoods across the city of Houston are concerned about a proposal to build more than 20 affordable-housing complexes.
Kerwin Tregre was one of dozens of people who voiced their opinion at City Hall on Tuesday.
"I'm not against low-income housing, but historically it tends to start out as a noble project. But it sometimes draws people that are not noble and brings increased crime into the area," Tregre said.
The projects include:
- Avenue Terraces at 4300 Irvington Blvd.
- Bellfort Park at 4135 Bellfort
- Cleme Manor at 5300 Coke
- Cypress Creek at Wayside at NW corner S. Wayside and Beltway 8
- NHH at Reed at 2620 Reed Road
- Palm Parque at 5330 Griggs Road
- Rush Creek Oaks Ranch in 1100 block of Hugh Street
- Selinksy Street at 6013 Selinksy
- Village on Harvest Time at SE corner Imperial Valley at Harvest Time
- Women's Home Phase 2 at 7600 Hammerly
- Tidwell Lakes Ranch in 14500 block of Tidwell
- Catalon at Queenston and Coventry Park
- East End Lofts at 3300 Harrisburg Blvd.
- Forestwood Lodge at 6501 Purple Sage
- Greens At Brentford at SW corner Beechnut and Brentford
- Hurstbourne Crossing at corner Oates and I-10
- Lafayette Park at 10500 Synott
- Lodge At Huffmeister near 12423 Huffmeister
- Monarch at 8500 S. Sam Houston Parkway East
- Paddock at the Bayou near Beltway 8 and Old Chocolate Bayou
- Seminole Ridge at W. Bellfort east of Synott
All of the projects have been OK'd by city leaders. They will get a final vote Wednesday, but then there is another approval step at the state level.
Meanwhile, even with local and state approval, there still has to be funding, and some experts think there won't be enough funding to go around for all of the low-income housing projects listed above.
But the developer of the East End Lofts, David Koogler, said, "This part of town, the land prices are escalating rapidly. We have a small window where we can afford land and build this type of facility."
