Suspect sought in shooting that wounded reserve deputy

HOUSTON – Police are looking for a man who shot an off-duty, reserve deputy constable while trying to rob him Saturday morning, officials said Monday.

The shooting happened about 1 a.m. near the intersection of Cavalcade and Wipprecht streets.

According to Houston police, the deputy was giving a ride to an acquaintance. When he dropped the man off at the corner, the man pulled out a gun, hit the deputy with it and demanded money, police said. The pair struggled and exchanged gunfire, before the man ran from the scene, police said.

Police said the deputy was shot in the leg and buttocks.

Originally, investigators said that a wounded man who showed up at Ben Taub Hospital after the shooting was believed to be connected. On Monday, investigators said that man was not involved.

The suspect was identified as 23-year-old Rajoun Johnson. He is wanted on a charge of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.
