HOUSTON -

A memorial service was held Saturday morning for a veteran Houston firefighter who died after suffering burns while battling a house blaze.

Daniel Groover, 46, was remembered during a church service at The Woodlands Church.

"We will never forget him. We mean that; we will never forget him," said HFD Chief Terry Garrison.

"Daniel Groover was a good man, a good firefighter and an excellent representative of a great city," Mayor Annise Parker said.

Groover died Wednesday at a hospital after being rescued from the fire scene. Investigators say Groover was inside a burning residence when he lost radio contact with other firefighters.

He'd been a Houston firefighter for 21 years.
