HOUSTON -

The defense is working to save the life of a man who killed a Bellaire police officer.

Attorneys for Harlem Lewis put his grandparents on the stand -- two people who have known him his entire life.

Lawyers for the 23-year-old say he is capable of caring and they hope the jury sentences him to life in prison, not the death penalty.

"This is a young man with limitations who panicked in a bad situation. Did a tragic and terrible act, but that doesn't mean you need to do anything more than put him in a cage, which is where he is going to spend the rest of his life," said defense attorney Patrick McCann.

Last week, Lewis was convicted of shooting and killing Bellaire Police Cpl. Jimmie Norman and auto shop owner Terry Taylor.

The jury gets to decide whether Lewis will get the death penalty or spend life in prison without parole.

Testimony continues Thursday.
