HOUSTON – Former President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, have spent another night hospitalized in Houston, but continue to improve.
America’s oldest living president was hospitalized Saturday after experiencing breathing problems. He was moved to the intensive care unit Wednesday and had a breathing tube installed.
Barbara Bush, 91, was hospitalized on Wednesday. She was diagnosed with bronchitis.

On Saturday, Jim McGrath, spokesman for the Bush family, released a statement on their condition:
"Following another good night’s rest, President and Mrs. Bush have both continued to improve over the past 24 hours. Mrs. Bush could possibly be discharged from Houston Methodist Hospital tomorrow, while President Bush will be remaining in the ICU for observation for a few more days. President Bush is breathing well without any mechanical assistance, his spirits are high, and he is looking forward to getting back to a regular schedule. In fact, he called his office last night at 6:30 p.m. to check in on his staff."
On Friday McGrath said the former president’s breathing tube was removed and he was breathing with some supplemental oxygen.
McGrath said the former first lady was feeling better and spending time with her husband.
The former president will remain in the ICU for observation, McGrath said. He said Barbara Bush will remain hospitalized during the weekend as a precaution.
George H.W. Bush, 92, revealed several years ago that he suffered from a form of Parkinson's disease that left him unable to walk. He uses a wheelchair or a scooter to get around and had two other health scares in 2014 and 2015.
In December 2014, he was hospitalized after experiencing shortness of breath, and the following July he fell at his home in Kennebunkport, Maine, breaking the C2 vertebrae in his neck.
The injury did not result in any neurological problems, his spokesman said at the time.
