The search is over, but the grieving is just beginning, for a Beaumont family who lost a toddler Saturday night.
Just after midnight Sunday, search teams recovered the body of a little girl who had disappeared during a family reunion at Carver Park in Texas City.
"I could see a bunch of flash lights searching like they were searching for something," said neighbor and pastor Walter Skinner.
Family members say Kaloni Corbin would have turned two next month.
She and her family had traveled to Texas City from Beaumont to attend a family reunion at Culver Park. They told police they noticed she was missing around 6:30 p.m. Saturday as they packed up their things and gathered the children.
"The kids were at the splash pad, they were at the playground, and somehow she slipped away, said relative Wade Oliphant. "I guess her parents turned their back and looked around and she was gone. We immediately started to look everywhere."
"The cops stopped by the house and asked us if we had seen the little girl," said one man in a nearby neighborhood.
Several search teams and multiple law enforcement agencies spent hours looking for the child Saturday evening. They went door to door in the neighborhood and a dive team searched a nearby pond. Her body was later discovered in that pond, just feet away from the covered picnic area where her family had been gathered.
According to the Department of Family and Protective Services, so far 36 children have drowned in Texas this year.
