Police search for burglar in West University

WEST UNIVERSITY, Texas -

Police are searching for a burglar who ran from police in West University.

Police are looking in the area of Belmont and Pittsburg. Police closed several streets nearby.

West University place police put out a code red. it's a call to residents that warned them about the suspect on the loose and told them to stay inside.

"Yeah, it was a shelter in place," said Michael Kaplan, a West U resident who received the message from police. "Then they gave us an update 30 to 45 minutes ago, the shelter in place was off but he's still out there."

Kaplan told Local 2, West u is a small and tight knit community where residents have confidence in the police department. That's why many people were still seen outside riding their bikes, walking and plating baseball despite the warning.

"Call it silly," Kaplan said " But we're pretty comfortable, it's a very safe neighborhood.

The burglar was last seen wearing a black cap, white t-shirt, and black shorts as he hopped fences in the area about 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
