Foster mother fighting for her life

HOUSTON – Even in a hospital bed, Donna Meyers refuses to let cancer take away her smile.

"We're not hoping, we're expecting a miracle," daughter Cherise Goodman said.

Cards, flowers and praying hands have surrounded Donna since she got to the hospital. Pain in her lower abdomen led to several tests and one diagnosis after the other. After consistent pain, Donna and her family were hit with a bombshell.

"He came in and said she had stage four cancer and 14 nodules were found in her lungs," Goodman said.
The disease also spread to Donna's brain. Her family says they are in shock.

"I kind of just broke down in my room," foster daughter Jessica Weldon said.

Donna has two biological children, two children she adopted and more than 200 children that she's fostered over the last 25 years. They call call her mom. With the help of her late husband, she raised them at their home on Betel Ranch, always driving home the notion they're not forgotten.

"Even though biological parents let them down, father's abused them...that there is a heavenly father that loved them more than anyone in the world," Goodman said.

Twenty-five years ago Donna quit her high-paying job. The family had to downsize and move, but the sacrifice was worth the investment to her.

"I was a wild kid. I had no one that cared or loved me," foster son Jonathan Buchanan said. "She's the first person to actually show that she cared for me and she wanted the best for me."

Without any insurance and little money, her family is concerned Donna won't receive proper treatment.

"Medically all the tests show that this is it for my mom," Goodman said. "But we believe that God is not done with her yet. She has nine boys at her home right now that need her desperately."

Donna's family members tells us their mother will be transferred to UTMB Galveston later this week.
