HOUSTON -

A man is dead after a crash in north Houston, and police say the driver responsible is facing serious charges.

Around 3 a.m. Saturday, investigators say a driver ran a red light at the North Freeway feeder road at North Gessner.

His vehicle slammed into another SUV. Investigators say the crash was so violent, the driver of the SUV was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.

Witnesses rushed to help rescue the driver who, police say, caused the accident.

"The witnesses stated that when they were able to get him out of the Chevrolet Suburban, he fled the scene on foot," said Ignacio Izaguirre with the Houston Police Department. "A wrecker driver who arrived shortly after was able to find the suspect who'd fled on foot hiding behind some bushes."

Police say they believe alcohol was involved. The driver now faces intoxication manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid charges.
