Police: Radio Shack robbers encounter 'time release' safe

HOUSTON – Two men robbed a Radio Shack Saturday, but weren't able to get away with everything inside the store's safe, police say.

It happened about 2 p.m. at Shepherd and 10th Street.

Two men wearing masks walked into the store, locked the front doors and ordered the four employees into the back.

The men made one employee unlock a cage containing electronics, including pre-paid cell phones, iPhones and iPads, investigators said.

The thieves could not get the money out of the safe because it has a "time release" feature, which requires passwords to gain access over a period of five minutes, police said.

The men were able to steal cash out of the register, investigators said. The total theft of cash and property is said to be in the thousands of dollars.

Employees said it was considered an aggravated robbery. Just recently, the staff had been trained to handle robberies, employees said.
