Police: Person of interest in double slaying shot by officers in SW Houston

Investigators: Keith Turner, 45, fired shots at Houston police officers

HOUSTON – The gunman who was wounded in a shootout with police officers in southwest Houston is the same man police say could be connected to the slayings of a mother and son who were found dead in their home.

Houston police said the shooting happened around 5 pm on Sunday in a strip mall parking lot on the corner of West Airport Boulevard and Hillcroft.

Police said they had successfully tracked down a pickup truck that was taken from a home on Bahia near Willview, where a mother and her adult son were killed on Saturday.

Detectives named Keith Turner, 45, a person of interest in the slayings.

"They (police) saw a male suspect making suspicious movements inside the vehicle," said Victor Senties of the Houston Police Department.

Police said it was clear Turner wasn't going to cooperate.

"He puts his hands in the air as if he's challenging (officers), puts on a sweater, reaches into his waistband, pulls out a gun and starts to fire shots," said Senties.

Investigators said after Turner fired at officers, they fired back, wounding Turner.

Turner was rushed to a hospital. His condition has not been released.

It was a close call for a mother and her two children who were caught right in the middle of the police shootout. A veteran police officer rescued them. None of them was hurt.
