HOUSTON - A Houston police officer is in the hospital after being shot during traffic stop in northwest Houston Monday morning, and the man who shot him is dead, investigators said.
Police said two officers saw Jared Alvarez, 32, driving erratically on Saddle Rock near Sweetwater shortly after midnight and they followed him to try to pull him over.
But, instead of stopping, the officers said Alvarez continued to drive slowly on Saddle Rock with his car door open.
When Alvarez got to the end of the street, the officers got out of the patrol car and gave Alvarez verbal commands.
Investigators said Alvarez out his car in reverse then fired shots at the officers, wounding Officer W. Fikes in both arms.
Fikes' partner shot and killed Alvarez, detectives said.
Alvarez lived near the scene. According to court records, Alvarez had previously been in jail aggravated robbery and drug charges.
"Maybe he was afraid to go back to jail," neighbor Victoria Torres said.
"He told them, 'I'm not going back for nothing," said Daniel Torres, Alvarez's friend. "He only shot twice. They didn't have to go up to him and just shoot him."
Fikes was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital and is expected to be OK.
Both officers have been with HPD for two years.
