HOUSTON - Two men suspected of stealing candy from a grocery store were arrested after a chase on Sunday, police said.
Friendswood police said Angel Manuel Zayas, 39, and Alexis Zayas, 18, were seen stealing the items at HEB, 701 West Parkwood Avenue, and leaving in a brown Lincoln Navigator.
An officer arrived at the store and said he noticed the vehicle leaving the parking lot. The vehicle sped off at a high rate of speed. That's when a police pursuit began, the officer said.
At the intersection of F.M. 518 and Eagles Lakes Drive, the driver began passing other motorists on the shoulder of the road and traveled at more than 100 mph, authorities said.
League City police officers were notified that the pursuit was entering their city. As the officer continued behind, the driver of the Navigator continued speeding and running red lights, police said.
The officer said the passenger was throwing bags out the window.
The driver was finally stopped at the intersection of F.M. 518 and Newport Boulevard, in League City with the assistance of League City police officers, authorities said. Police said the driver opened the door and placed his hands in the air, but did not get out of the vehicle.
Officers said they realized the driver's legs were amputated above the knee. Authorities said the vehicle was not equipped with any specialized equipment to accommodate a handicapped driver. Police believe the driver was using a walking cane to press down on the gas pedal and brake pedal.
Five bags of candy were still inside the vehicle and the bags of candy thrown out of the window were later retrieved, authorities said.
Both the driver and the passenger were taken into custody.
Angel Manuel Zayas was charged with theft, evading arrest in a vehicle and driving while an invalid license. His driver's license was suspended and he had six prior convictions for theft, authorities said. His bond was set at $50,000.
Alexis Zayas was charged with theft and tampering with physical evidence. His bond was set at $5,000.
