Police: Man stabbed over BBQ pit

HOUSTON – A woman's birthday party in southwest Houston turned violent after her next-door neighbor stabbed her nephew with a sword-like blade, police said.

"It was like a long sword," Regina Washington said while holding her hands three feet part. "We noticed (my nephew) was bleeding real, real bad. He damn near died in the house."

Washington said the altercation started Saturday night when her neighbor, Claborne Duncan, 21, asked to borrow her grill.

"My husband had both of the barbeque pits lit up," Washington said. "They wanted to borrow that barbeque pit and I told them no."

Detectives said that's when Duncan and Washington's nephew, Lugine, got into a fight.

"My nephew saw him trying to cut my husband," Washington said. "So he went and threw (Duncan) through that glass window and they were tussling on the ground."

According to police, Duncan used the large knife to stab Lugine in the leg. He was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital and is expected to recover.

Duncan, who has a history of violence, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to county records, Duncan spent a year in jail for stabbing another man with a knife.

Duncan was booked into the Harris County Jail with bond set at $30,000.
