HOUSTON - A man died while he was in police custody, police said.
Jarmar Hutchinson, 34, of Houston, was pronounced dead at East Houston Regional Hospital on Monday night.
Houston police said Hutchinson was stopped on suspicion of a traffic violation in the 13100 block of the East Freeway about 1:30 p.m. Monday. While talking to officers, Hutchinson took off running, police said.
Officers said Hutchinson was seen putting what was believed to be a baggy of white rocks, believed to be narcotics, into his mouth.
Hutchinson was arrested nearby, where he told officers he was having trouble breathing. He was transported to the hospital and died about 8:15 p.m.
According to investigators, more than 400 grams of Codeine syrup was found in Hutchinson's vehicle.
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will determine the cause of Hutchison's death.
