Stray bullet goes into woman's bedroom in Fort Bend County

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – A woman who lives in Fort Bend County says a bullet came through her bedroom ceiling, just inches from her bed Thursday.

Fort Bend County deputies received 31 calls on New Year's Eve for celebratory gunfire.

The hole in Lydia Mendoza's ceiling inches away from her bed reminds her how quickly life can change.

"That was close," she said. "But thank God nothing happened."

At home the Mendozas could hear fireworks going off. But around 12:30 a.m., the pops of firecrackers took on a different tone.

"We didn't think anything of it," Elena Mendoza said. "We just thought it was a loud boom from the fireworks."

The next morning when Lydia stepped on the carpet out of bed, she felt something hard. It was a bullet.

When the Mendozas filed a report, a deputy told them the bullet came from a .45 caliber handgun.

"He told us that it has the same force that it doesn't lose speed," Elena Mendoza said. "It makes you think. It went through our roof, our ceiling and into the floor. So somebody could have been hurt."

It was a close call for the family, but they choose not to live in fear. The bullet hole may be in their ceiling, but they say there's another reminder of protection hanging on their wall.

"The cross is there and that is who protects our home and no weapon shall be formed against us shall prosper," Elena Mendoza said.

The Mendozas say they love their neighborhood and that for the most part it's a peaceful community. They just wanted their neighbors to be aware of the issue.
