Police investigate toddler's death in Pasadena

PASADENA, Texas – Police in Pasadena are trying to determine how a two-year-old boy died Saturday.

Investigators said the boy was found around 2:30 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 1100 block of Burke Road near Jenkins in Pasadena.

Jessica Suazo lives in the building where the boy was found.

"When I came out here, I was still in my pajamas. I [saw] the guy rocking the baby in his hands back and forth. He was screaming something," said Suazo.

Investigators said the boy was unresponsive when emergency crews were called to the scene.

Suazo told KPRC Local 2's Nick Giovanni the boy had a black eye and an open wound from which he was bleeding.

When police arrived, investigators said they performed CPR on the child and continued while he was being transported to the hospital.

"They had him inside the ambulance for a good 15 to 20 minutes sitting right here," said witness Edgar Covarrubis.

The child was pronounced dead upon arrival at Columbia Bayshore Medical Center, police said.

"I'm numb.... still in shock. I have a one-year-old. Just to know that happened to a little boy, that breaks my heart," said Suazo.

"I have 2 boys of my own," said Covarrubis. "I fear for them every time they step outside. For something like this to happen so close to home, it's like it just makes me want to protect them even more."

The cause of death is under investigation. Police said they are awaiting the results of an autopsy and right now no charges are pending.

KPRC Local 2 will report more details as they emerge.
