GALVESTON, Texas – Funeral services were held Friday night for a Galveston County man hours after police said they are investigating his death as a possible homicide.
Caeser Robert Nunez, 36, died Monday after he was involved in physical altercation on August 17 in the parking lot of the Galveston County Daily News where he worked as a deliveryman.
His family said an autopsy showed Nunez suffered blunt force trauma to the head.
"Nobody should have to die that way," Caesar's mother, Linda Nunez said. "It could have been prevented."
Police said Nunez went home after the fight but reported for duty at the newspaper in time for his next scheduled shift. He told his supervisors he wasn't feeling well and decided to go home. His mother found him on Sunday in the backyard of his home in Texas City.
"In my heart of hearts, my son would be alive right now if someone had done something quickly," Linda Nunez said. "When I found him, he was gasping for air."
Galveston Police spokesman Lt. Michael Gray said they haven't ruled anything out and are looking at Nunez's death as a possible homicide.
"We believe the injuries sustained in the altercation did contribute to his passing," Gray said.
Nunez was employed by the Galveston County News for just more than two years. The paper issued a statement on Friday: "The passing of Caesar Nunez is a tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this most difficult of times. We are cooperating fully with authorities in their efforts to determine what happened to our co-worker," read the statement from Patrick Graham.
Nunez is survived by his mother, father and an 8-year-old daughter.
