Police: Car with woman, 2 children inside slams into fast-food restaurant

Witness: The kids were screaming and crying

BAYTOWN, Texas – A car with a woman and her two young children inside crashed into a Jack in the Box restaurant on Friday.

Baytown police said the crash happened around 8 a.m. at the Jack in the Box in Baytown in the 900 block of Decker Drive near Defee.

Workers were left to clean up debris Friday morning.

"The 2001 Lincoln was driven by a 27-year-old woman who lives here in Baytown (and) had two children, one 6 and one 5 ... all not injured," Detective Brian Parker said.

Investigators said there were people inside the restaurant, but no one was injured in the crash.

Sophan Som works at a nearby business. He said when he heard the crash, he ran outside to see what it was.

"The kids were screaming and crying, but everyone helped her get out of the car and take a seat," said Som.

Police said it looked like the woman was speeding and somehow lost control of the car before smashing into the building.

"The driver advised her steering wheel locked up after she had received a recall on her steering wheel," said Parker.

Contractors said it could be up to a month before the restaurant is back up and running.

Police said they're still investigating the cause of the crash. The woman may be cited for failure to control speed.
