LA PORTE, Texas – Police are searching for a man who broke into a family's home and moved a sleeping child.
La Porte police said the owner of a home in the 1200 block of Robinson Road woke up when he heard a man burglarizing the home about 5 a.m. on Tuesday.
Detectives said the homeowner, his wife, sister-in-law and four children under the age of 10 were inside the home at the time of the break-in.
The man may have tried to remove one of the sleeping children from a bed, investigators said. Police said they don't know if the burglar moved the child to get to something he wanted to steal or if he had other intentions.
When the homeowner discovered the man, he chased him out of the house. The homeowner knocked the burglar off a getaway bicycle and the two briefly struggled, but the man got away, officials said.
Investigators said the man left behind a bag of items from the home and a Kindle or Nook, but police have not determined who owns that device.
The man was described as Hispanic and 5 feet 6 inches to 6 feet tall with close-cut dark brown or black hair and a modified hairline along the forehead area. Officials said they don't know how old the man is, but he spoke Spanish. He was last seen wearing a white sweatshirt or sweater and black pants with white markings.
Police said a man matching the suspect's description was seen riding a bicycle along state Highway 225 near Center Street in Deer Park a few hours before the burglary.
