Police arrest man accused of multiple fraud charges

HOUSTON – The Houston Police Department has made an arrest in a fraud case.

They were working a proactive fraud investigation into a person who used fake identities to steal a car and defraud a luxury high rise apartment.

Officers took Gilbert Mitchell into custody.

Mitchell was in possession of fake driver’s licenses, stolen identities, numerous debit/credit cards in other people’s names, checking account information belonging to other people, fraudulent banking information and more. Mitchell used a fake license and Social Security number to rent the luxury apartment for himself.

Officers obtained information that led them to the luxury high rise in downtown Houston.

While conducting a search warrant, Mitchell came to the location in a stolen 2015 Chrysler 200 belonging to Hertz. The rental car was stolen after being rented with a fake driver’s license. Hertz had been searching for their vehicle since June.

Mitchell is being charged with the second-degree felony offense of tampering with a government record, fraudulent use of identifying information and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Police said that if any business or person has been defrauded by Mitchell, who also uses the alias Gregory Jones, to contact the Houston Police Department’s Burglary and Theft Division.
