Investigators said thieves are targeting AC units from unoccupied homes and businesses in the La Marque area.

Because of this, police said they've stepped up patrols throughout the city, and police have asked anyone who sees anything suspicious to give them a call.

Police said a lone thief will typically walk or drive around the area to research air conditioners, then come back with two or three others. The crew will then disconnect the A/C units from their location and load them onto a truck bed.

The stolen units are later dismantled at another location and various precious metals inside, including copper and aluminum, are sold to area scrap yards, officials said.

Officials recommend owners log the make, model and serial number of all components related to their exterior AC units. Owners are also urged to install metal cages around the units along with lighting to keep them illuminated at night.

If you see anything suspicious, you're urged to give Crime Stoppers of La Marque a call at 409-938-TIPS (8477). You can also click here to visit the city's website.

Information that leads to felony charges could get you a reward of up to $5,000.
