Police: 2 face charges after trying to take baby from hospital

HOUSTON – A couple tried to take a baby from a Houston hospital without permission on Wednesday, investigators said.

Houston police said an alarm went off at Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, 5656 Kelly, about 7 a.m. and officers were called out.

The child was not removed from the hospital and was not hurt, investigators said.

The child's mother and her boyfriend were detained at the hospital, police said.

Elida Galvan, 22, took her son to the hospital because he looked pale and she thought he may swallowed something he should not have, relatives said.

Child endangerment charges were pending against Galvan and her boyfriend, 17-year-old Ricardo Maya.

According to relatives, Galvan is pregnant and Maya is that child's father.

Detectives have not said why Galvan was not allowed to take the child.

Children's Protective Services officials said they are actively involved in the case. Officials have not said who will have custody of the child once he is released from the hospital.
