HOUSTON – A young, male Pit bull is all tail wags and kisses now, after being rescued from a public storage facility on Hempstead Highway in Northwest Houston.
According to Houston Police, someone called them after hearing the dog cry from inside one of the locked units. Officers opened it up and discovered the dog.
"The conditions were deplorable and the animal was kept in filth," said Jarrad Mears, Animal Control Supervisor for the city of Houston. "Definitely not a way to keep an animal - that's for sure."
Mears told KPRC Local 2 they believe the dog had been locked inside the storage unit for several months.
"Obviously if it's been here for months someone's been feeding and watering it," Mears said.
But the dog wasn't being taken care of well and now BARC has taken custody of the animal.
Houston Police officers and animal control workers went back to the storage facility to check the temperature inside; they're gathering evidence to eventually build a criminal case against the dog's owner. They said it was well over 100 degrees.
"It was far too hot for an animal to be inside," said Mears. "Nothing could survive it. I don't know how the animal made it. It's under investigation right now, no charges have been filed but they are being pursued."
