HISD students participate in MLK oratory competition

HOUSTON – A group of local fourth and fifth graders are celebrating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. early.

They competed in the 19th annual Gardere MLK Junior Oratory Competition and are hoping to earn one of 12 positions in the preliminary round.

Students presented original speeches answering the question: "If Dr. King were to win the Nobel Prize today, what would he say in his acceptance speech?"

The students are from 24 elementary schools in the Houston Independent School District.
