People trapped in high-rise elevator rescued

HOUSTON – Several people were trapped in a downtown Houston high-rise elevator Thursday.

Firefighters were called to the Chevron building, which used to be the Enron building, at 1400 Smith Street shortly before 10 a.m. Three people were stuck in the elevator between the building's 49th and 50th floor.

Crews took an elevator next to the one that was stuck and then extended a ladder to reach those trapped. All three were rescued through the top of the elevator.

One woman was taken to a hospital. Officials said she panicked when the elevator got stuck.

Two men who were inside the elevator were not hurt.

Elevator mechanics are investigating what went wrong.
