HOUSTON – Houston police said a pedestrian was killed trying to cross a southwest Houston street early Tuesday morning.
Witnesses reported seeing a dark colored SUV drive through the intersection of Richmond Avenue at Dunvale around 2 a.m. Tuesday. The driver hit the man and then sped away from the scene of the crash.
"There was a pedestrian walking in the crosswalk on Richmond Avenue and the vehicle traveling eastbound on Richmond hit the pedestrian in the crosswalk. The pedestrian was pronounced dead on arrival and the vehicle fled the scene," said Officer J.D. Rossman with the Houston Police Department.
Investigators said usually in cases like this, evidence like bumpers or side mirrors will be left behind, but not this time. They are hoping area surveillance cameras will help in tracking down the person who drove off.
Investigators plan on coming back out to the area later Tuesday to collect more evidence.
"They will come out and work to pull video from the intersection or surveillance video from surrounding business," Rossman said.
Police have not released the name or age of the victim.
Officers are also working to determine if the pedestrian had the right-of-way at the time of the crash.
