Feud erupts at Galena Park public meeting

GALENA PARK, Texas – Galena Park city leaders continued their months-long public squabble Monday.

An "emergency" scheduled meeting lasted a little more than 12 minutes before city commissioners walked out the door, without the mayor ever adjourning the meeting.

Mayor Esmeralda Moya does not see eye to eye with the city's elected commissioners.

Moya, through an attorney, last week threatened to block the city's public accounts because she claims her name was illegally removed from the accounts, and city spending is not undergoing proper oversight.

Several city officials, including the city's attorney, claim Moya removed her own name from the account.

While Moya seems to have little support within local government, most meetings are filled with citizens who support her aggressive style and seemingly fearless efforts at reform.

"They are not letting her do the job she was elected to do, they always try take control," said resident Barry Ponder.

But commissioners appear unified in their response that Moya is ill-equipped to run a meeting or a city, and refuses to listen to those around her.

"I mean, threaten the city finances? I mean, she's playing Russian roulette with city finances. I think it's wrong," City Commissioner Juan Flores said.

"I am here for the city. I am here for the people of Galena Park, to protect them," Moya said.
