HOUSTON – A man who authorities say shot his wife during an argument is dead after a standoff with deputies in the Alief area.
The standoff happened after police say a husband shot his wife during an argument in front of their children at Homeland and Redhill. Authorities say the wife was lying in the front yard when deputies arrived.
The neighborhood is back open after being shut down for several hours while deputies investigated.
The Harris County High Risk Operations unit arrived armed and ready. They were looking for a man believed to be barricaded inside his Alief home armed with a rifle.
According to investigators, the man got into an argument with his wife and shot her in the shoulder. The couple's four kids were in the house when it happened.
"There were four children initially on scene, they were all safe. Once deputies arrived they were taken away from the scene," said Deputy Thomas Gilliland with the Sheriff's Office.
The kids were safe and the wife was taken to the hospital. Deputies began to look for the husband. For several hours, they tried to get him to come out of the home. When he didn't, they sent in a robot equipped with cameras.
Investigators found the man dead in the back of the home. They say it appears he shot himself.
The situation ended just before 4 p.m. as people who live in the area were trying to get home. The roads and entrances to the neighborhood were blocked and many people became stuck.
"They just asked if we were going this way, but I don't think they're going to let us go that way. I don't know what's going on," said one neighbor.
"I'm late for work. I told officers. He said call the boss you may have to come to work late," another neighbor said.
We are told the wife is in good condition at the hospital and is going to be OK. Deputies say this isn't the first time they've been called to this home.
