A man who initially told police his girlfriend killed herself is now charged in her murder.
Police say on July 12, officers responded to a shooting call at the Oak Villa apartments in the 3500 block of West Little York Road. According to investigators, the man and his girlfriend, who is also the mother of his baby, had been arguing throughout the day and he told them he stepped outside for a moment when he heard a gunshot inside the apartment. He says he went back inside, put on a latex glove and put pressure on her wound as a neighbor called police.
Officers say the woman, 21-year-old Julia Green, suffered a gunshot wound to the back of her neck. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators say a witness says the two had an abusive relationship and they found a contusion on her temple.
Officers also discovered the 10-day-old infant inside the apartment at the time.
The man, identified as Leonard Keith Dawson, refused to give consent for investigators to search the apartment, police say. A warrant was issued and the crime scene unit was called in to investigate.
Police say evidence at the scene and an autopsy contradicted Dawson's statement that Green shot herself. Dawson was arrested after investigators interviewed him.
Dawson, 24, is charged with murder.
