Patrons notice extra security in place after shot fired at RodeoHouston

HOUSTON – There are many security checkpoints face by visitors entering the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Thousands of people pour through the gates daily.

Visitors are required to take their cellphones out of pockets and put them into a tray, purses must be open for inspection and anything big goes in a tray as visitors walk through a metal detector.

Rodeo organizers said they are the same metal detectors that were used during the Super Bowl and during every NFL game.

"I think things can happen anywhere. So, there's probably nothing they can do to be 100 percent," Lauren Jackson said.

Jackson, her daughter, niece and friend are at RodeoHouston on Friday night.

"So they just do a quick look through at your purse. Make sure there's nothing, probably looking for a big object. Then you go through the metal detectors," Jackson said.

Organizers said there are signs throughout the park indicating that guns are not allowed, either open or concealed.

Jackson's friend was at the rodeo Wednesday night when police believe someone fired at least one shot, causing panic on the rodeo grounds.

"They have really upped their security. I was here yesterday and they upped their security outside, as well," Tracy Ly said.
