HOUSTON – Parking meters will soon be going up along a street filled with bars and restaurants.

Houston City Council approved an ordinance on Wednesday that will allow the city to place parking meters along Washington Avenue.

Because paid lots are expensive in the area, employees and valet services have been taking up the free parking spots along the road and many customers have been parking on nearby residential streets.

Residents said they have seen many bar and restaurant customers walking around their neighborhood drunk and some of them have been seen fighting and urinating in front yards.

The city plans to install 45 pay stations for 350 spaces. The installations will take several months.

This is a pilot program that will be in place for 18 months and then be re-evaluated to determine if it helps solve the problem.
