Investigators say they've busted up an identity theft ring, and the people being targeted were parents. Those victims and their bank account information were found through their children's day care.
The United States Secret Service says a couple from Houston who took their children to the Kids R Kids pre-school in Pearland are the victims of a bank scheme that cost the couple more than $20,000.
The feds say pre-school teacher Tisha Tinsley was the brains behind the operation. Investigators say she stole the checking account numbers from a couple. They say she then used that bank account like her own personal wallet to pay utility bills and various other bills for her friends; those friends who are now also charged in connection with this case are people like Johnathan Grace, Cassandra Baldwin, Shandell Lott and Kanisha Coleman.
According to court documents, Tisha Tinsley over two years somehow set up a system where she could electronically withdraw money from Vernon and Mary Smith's bank account -- a system that allowed her to withdraw $20,900.
"With her job, we are still investigating. It is new to us, too. This just landed on us. I'm actually meeting with the owners coming up to make decisions from here," said Cherish Mulford with The Primrose School.
At the Primrose School in Pearland where Tinsley teaches, her boss is stunned by what has happened. She says Tinsley was arrested at the school last Friday.
"Truthfully, they're shocked, very saddened to know one of our teachers could be accused of something like this," Mulford said.
Tinsley is facing felony theft charges. The others charged with her who also benefited from this scheme are now facing equally serious crimes.
Tinsley has actually taught at several pre-schools in this area. She worked at Kids R Kids where she allegedly stole a couple's banking information. She left that job years ago.
She currently works at The Primrose School, where they say she has been a well-respected member of the faculty.
