National Night Out set for Tuesday in Houston

HOUSTON – An annual citywide event aimed at strengthening communities will happen Tuesday night in Houston.

The goal of National Night Out is to put an end to crime by getting people to leave their homes and become engaged with their neighbors and community leaders.

Now in its 33rd year, most cities observe it in August, but Houston opts to mark the event in October.

“And I think you all know why,” said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, joking about the steamy summers of the Bayou City.

Both the Houston Police Department and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office will host events from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. throughout Harris County.

“It’s just important more so than any time before for people to get out of their homes, get outside, meet their neighbors, meet people from the law enforcement community from all of the different areas and just get to know one another,” Turner said. “That’s the main thing.”
