Driver dead after police chase on Highway 59 in Fort Bend County

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – A man who led police on a chase up and down the Southwest Freeway after a drive-by shooting in Fort Bend County has died, according to officials

The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office says the suspect was Andres Nunez, 21.

Jennifer Acosta, 17, who tells KPRC she was Nunez's ex-girlfriend, says the incident began after a confrontation between her and Nunez early Sunday morning.

Acosta says Nunez first came to her house at about 7a.m., threatening to kill her and himself if she didn't get back together with him.

"He just got the gun, he pointed it at me. After that, he got the gun and pointed it at his mouth," says Acosta. "I told him, 'Just leave. Please leave.' And he did leave."

Acosta says Nunez returned at 9.a.m. and opened fire at the home.

Fort Bend County deputies tell KPRC that Nunez was in a brown Ford F-150 pickup truck when he fired several shots at a home in the 16100 block of West Bellfort St. at 9 a.m.

Acosta says she called 911 and gave a description of the truck and identified Nunez as the shooter.

Police saw the truck on the northbound side of the Southwest Freeway and the chase began. Nunez exited the freeway onto Spur 527, turned around and headed back south toward Sugar Land.

He then exited at Brazos River turnaround and headed back north on the freeway.

"I was crying because I didn't think that would be him. I thought I was dreaming for a minute," said Acosta.

Officers say Nunez was firing out of the window of the truck while speeding down the freeway.

Spike strips were used to stop the truck, and the vehicle spun out and crashed in the 16500 block of Highway 59.

"He lost control because one of his tires was flat. And he spun around here on the freeway where you can see the vehicle came to rest," said James Hines, with the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities say it is unknown if Nunez shot himself and crashed or if he shot himself after the crash. Officials say Nunez was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office, Houston Police Department, Stafford Police Department, Sugar Land Police Department and Toll Road law enforcement were involved in the chase.

No members of law enforcement were hurt during the chase, according to the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office.
