One dead in small plane crash in Galveston County

GALVESTON, Texas – Authorities are on scene investigating an ultralight plane crash in Galveston County in which the pilot was killed.

The Galveston County Sheriff's Office tells Local 2 they received a call at around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday that a small plane crashed in the 7500 block of Avenue C in the unincorporated area of Santa Fe.

Witness called 911 after they saw the plane lose altitude, then heard the impact.

Deputies say authorities arrived on scene and found the pilot dead on the scene.

The victim was identified as 67-year-old Roger Brown, a resident of the rural Santa Fe area.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says Brown purchased the aircraft a few weeks back, but that this was reportedly his first flight.

"Apparently he had a landing strip on his property and he's practiced taxiing several times but he's never actually got it in the air," said Colin Kolupski with DPS.

The cause of the crash is unknown.
