The driver who led Humble and Houston police officers on a chase Thursday has been charged with murder.  

Officials said it all started Thursday around 3:30 p.m. after Humble police received a call about a theft at the Macy’s in t he Dearbrook Mall.

Police said three female suspects stole $2,600 worth merchandise and then drove away. Officers followed the car that was driven by Shiquinta Franklin, 21. Several attempts were made to stop the car, but the suspects kept driving and crossed into the Houston city limits. The chase continued on Highway 59 until the suspects took the Quitman exit.

The suspects ran a red light and hit a passenger vehicle with four people inside. The victim’s vehicle flipped upside down. The female driver of that car, a 43-year-old Houston woman, died at the scene. The three other passengers were young boys ages 5, 7 and 15. They were transported to Ben Taub Hospital with critical injuries.

The three suspects were also transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials charged Franklin with murder on Friday.

The two other suspects, 21-year-old Ashley Howard and 21-year-old Racquel Gonzales, have been charged with felony theft and felony evading.
