HOUSTON – What appeared to be a harmless advertisement promoting Old Navy's "Thank You Event" turned into a heated Twitter thread about the clothing company's decision to use an interracial family in the ad.

Old Navy tweeted a photo on Friday with a black child on the back of a white man hugging a black woman.

"Oh, happy day!" the ad read. "Our #ThankYouEvent is finally here. Take 30% off your entire purchase."

While many Twitter users applauded Old Navy's effort to show diversity, some did not like it.

"Absolutely disgusting. What's next? Gender neutral bathrooms? Pedophilia acceptance propaganda?! Never shopping here again," one user tweeted.

"My family and I will never step into an @OldNavy store again. This miscegenation junk is rammed down our throats from every direction," another user tweeted.

In support of Old Navy, people started sharing photos of their interracial families.

"Hey @OldNavy, my family and I thank you for the diversity in this ad. #LoveWins, no matter what color," Khary Penebaker tweeted.

"Thanks for showing families of all colors are beautiful. P.S. My kids and husband are clothes solely by you," Alannah Cook tweeted.

"Thank you, Old Navy, for going beyond bigotry and hate! This was a wonderful warm ad that took moral courage and leadership," Kenneth Kircher tweeted.

The company has yet to respond to any comments.
