Officers: 2 killed in police chase

PASADENA, Texas – Two people were killed in a police chase that ended along an east Houston freeway on Monday, investigators said.

Pasadena police said the chase began along Pitts near Shaver, where an officer tried to stop the driver because the car had been reported stolen.

"Dispatch advised the officer that the vehicle was stolen. It was apparently taken in a carjacking. This was a strong-arm robbery that occurred in the city of Houston," Lt. James Holt said.

The driver fled westbound onto state Highway 225 and then went northbound on the East Loop 610, investigators said.

Detectives said the person behind the wheel was driving erratically, so officers backed off.

Police said the driver tried to take the Clinton exit, but he lost control and hit a concrete wall. The driver was thrown out of the vehicle, police said. He and his passenger, a woman, were both killed, detectives said. Their names have not been released.

Traffic on the East Loop was backed up with the exit at Clinton closed for four hours as the car sat shattered and mangled on the ramp. It was cleared and reopened by Tuesday morning rush hour.
