HOUSTON -

Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in downtown Houston.

It happened around 9 a.m. Thursday outside a Starbucks near the intersection of Dallas and Main.

Witnesses told Local 2 a man appeared to have stolen something from from Starbucks and was hiding it in his coat. As the man walked outside, he was confronted by a plain-clothes Houston police officer who ordered him to drop what he had taken.

Police say the man became combative and swung a large piece of wood at the officer. That's when the officer fired at least one shot at the man.

Officials said the man, who is in his 50s, was transported to an area hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm. He is expected to survive.

Houston police said the officer was unharmed during the incident. Officer S. Gallagher, sworn in as an officer in January 2010, is assigned to the Burglary and Theft Division, according to HPD.

The case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
